Understanding DNS: A Plain-English Guide

DNS (Domain Name System) is the phonebook of the internet. It turns a name people remember — like biswashost.com — into the IP address computers actually use.

The records you will actually use

  • A record: points a domain to an IPv4 address (your server).
  • AAAA record: the IPv6 version of an A record.
  • CNAME: points one name to another name (e.g. www to your root domain).
  • MX record: tells the world which server handles your email.
  • TXT record: holds verification and email-security settings like SPF and DKIM.

Why changes take time

DNS results are cached around the world to keep the internet fast. When you change a record, that cache has to expire first — this is called propagation and can take anywhere from a few minutes to 24–48 hours.

You can manage every one of these records from your hosting control panel — and we are always glad to help if something looks off.
